Administaff the right prescription for growing ER company
The Company
If you live in the suburbs in Texas, chances
are you’ve seen, or will soon see, a First Choice
Emergency Room near you. The facility, which was
named one of the 100 fastest-growing, privately-held
companies in 2006 in the Dallas/Fort Worth area,
has grown to eight locations since the original Flower
Mound location opened in 2002. The company
expects to open six more facilities within the next nine
months. First Choice is a full-service, free standing
emergency room unaffiliated with any hospital. “We
provide the same services a traditional hospital-based
emergency room does, but we’ve added top-notch
customer service and speed to the process,” says
Rick Covert, COO, CFO and partner.
The Challenge
First Choice, which is staffed by board-certified
ER physicians, ER-trained nurses and laboratory
technicians, can treat any emergency situation and
direct admit patients, when necessary, faster than
most hospital emergency rooms. “Hospitals love
us, because we have fully insured patients,” Covert
continues. “Patients love us for our customer service
and speed, and area physicians love us, because
we’re not trying to be anyone’s permanent doctor.
We treat your emergency and then send you back
to your primary physician. It’s a win-win-win proposition.”
First Choice Emergency Room is not an
urgent care center. Covert says that “all it takes is
getting someone to visit us once, experience our
service, and we grow by word of mouth.” That
growth has spawned numerous human resources
(HR) needs that led the company to Administaff.
The Solution
“There are myriad issues involved with start-ups;
some you’re completely unprepared to deal with,
and some you’re unfamiliar with and don’t have the
skills to deal with,” Covert adds. “Administaff takes
a huge chunk of those issues off your plate, so you
don’t have to deal with them when what you want
to do is focus on your growth. Ninety percent of
the work is done for you, and all you have to do is
work with Administaff to tweak the services to fit
your needs.”
The Value
First Choice views Administaff as integral to
every step of its hiring process, and employees are
frequently assigned fee-inclusive online courses to
help them acquire needed technology skills. “It
seems that every quarter, we become more aware
(of what Administaff offers), and we utilize more of
the services available to us,” Covert says. “We have
an employee relations manager on staff, and she
encourages employees to use the Employee Service
CenterSM for information, which is cost-effective for
us. I like the ability to participate in a 401(k) plan
for my retirement, which would be more difficult and
costly if we weren’t an Administaff client.
The Return on Investment
“I can’t put an actual dollar amount on our ROI,”
says Covert, “but if you add the cost of personnel
to replace Administaff and what they do, you’re
looking at the cost of hiring staff to keep up with
your forms, the time to develop relationships with
recruiters and more – Administaff easily saves us
thousands of dollars a year, and I’m a happy camper
with that!”
