ADMINISTAFF'S STRONG PERFORMANCE CONTINUES THROUGH THIRD QUARTER

  • Revenue and unit growth rates again reach 70% and 50%
  • Quarterly net income increases 69%
  • Year-to-date net income growth exceeds 100%

HOUSTON, TX – Nov. 1, 2000 – Administaff, Inc. (NYSE: ASF), the leading Professional Employer Organization (PEO), today announced results for the third quarter and nine months ended September 30, 2000. For the third quarter, the company reported net income and diluted earnings per share of $7.4 million and $0.25, versus $4.4 million and $0.16 in the 1999 period. For the nine months ended September 30, 2000, the company reported net income and diluted earnings per share of $7.7 million and $0.27, versus $3.8 million and $0.14 for the same period in 1999. These results reflect the two-for-one stock split effected October 16, 2000.

"During the third quarter we achieved record-setting financial performance while implementing several major initiatives that will further enhance our ability to attract, service and retain clients for the long term," commented Paul J. Sarvadi, president and chief executive officer. "With an increase in our service capacity and the release of the Administaff Information Management System ("AIMS"), our new proprietary PEO information system, we are poised to take full advantage of our traditionally strong year-end selling season."

Revenues for the third quarter of 2000 increased 70.9% to $962 million, primarily due to a 49.9% increase in the average number of worksite employees paid per month and a 14.8% increase in fee payroll cost per worksite employee per month. Gross profit increased 53.0% to

$40.1 million. The average gross profit per worksite employee per month increased 2.0% to $203 in the third quarter of 2000, versus $199 in the 1999 period, as continued pricing strength during the quarter was partially offset by increased payroll tax expense related to strong new client sales.

Operating expenses increased 48.9% over the 1999 period to $29.5 million. On a per worksite employee basis, operating expenses decreased 0.7% to $150 per month in the 2000 period from $151 per month in the 1999 period. As a result, operating income for the third quarter of 2000 increased 65.5% to $10.6 million compared to $6.4 million in the 1999 period.

"This was Administaff’s third consecutive quarter of better-than-expected revenue and unit growth combined with effective operating expense control," said Richard G. Rawson, executive vice president and chief financial officer. "While we would not forecast growth rates at these levels for the long term, we continue to see strong demand for our services in all markets, and we have a high level of confidence going into 2001."

For the nine months ended September 30, 2000 revenues increased 67.2% to $2.6 billion, primarily due to a 47.2% increase in the average number of worksite employees paid per month and a 13.8% increase in fee payroll cost per worksite employee per month. Gross profit increased 54.4% to $92.1 million, with an average monthly gross profit per worksite employee of $170 in the 2000 period compared to $162 in the 1999 period. Operating expenses increased 49.0% over the 1999 period, and increased to $153 per worksite employee per month from $151 in the 1999 period. As a result, operating income for the nine months ended September 30, 2000, increased 126.6% to $9.4 million compared to $4.1 million in the 1999 period.

Historically, the company’s earnings pattern has included losses in the first quarter, followed by improved profitability in subsequent quarters throughout the year. This pattern is due to the effects of employment-related taxes which are based on each employee’s cumulative earnings up to specified wage levels, causing employment-related taxes to be largest in the first quarter and then decline over the course of the year.

Administaff will be hosting a conference call today at 10:00 a.m. EST to discuss these results. To listen in, call 1-888-481-9034. You may also access the conference call via the Internet at www.administaff.com or www.streetfusion.com.
