eLearning Helps Balance Training, Productivity
(NU) Experts project 60 percent of new
jobs in the early 21st century will require skills possessed by
only 20 percent of todays workforce. If this prediction becomes
reality, how will todays workforce acquire tomorrows
skills given our fast-paced lives?
Internet-based education, or eLearning, may
be the answer. Incorporating eLearning tools is gaining popularity
as a "must-have" capability among businesses of all sizes
for many reasons:
- Greater Efficiency. eLearning brings
curriculum directly to employees on demand instead of requiring
travel. This is important to business owners who find it difficult
to send employees to offsite training due to company size or geographic
and schedule limitations. The Internet also enables "24/7"
availability so participants can better manage their time.
- Self Paced. Participants can move
quickly through familiar information and spend more time learning
new concepts because eLearning is not limited by the needs of
a class.
- Solution Driven. eLearning can be
customized so employees acquire critical skills needed to improve
their work performance. This can help entrepreneurs tailor courseware
to meet their unique business needs.
Administaff, a company that serves as a human
resources department for small and mid-sized businesses, has developed
an eLearning solution to help train employees working at client
companies. The company recently introduced eUniversity, a new online
learning management system that provides access to Web-based courses
and online registration for instructor-led courses.
eUniversity delivers skills training previously
available only in a live classroom setting. Courses are divided
into "byte size" 15 to 20 minute modules that can be easily
digested and taken whenever convenient. Now, participants can enhance
their skills at their leisure while also remaining productive at
work.
Administaff employees and clients can choose
among 58 Web-based courses through eUniversity including skills
training leadership, performance management, liability management,
communication, health and safety practices, productivity, customer
service, and more.
These courses complement a variety of instructor-led
courses available through Administaff University. Employees also
can plan and track their individual training programs and register
online for upcoming events.
"A commitment to training is essential
for hiring, improving and retaining valuable personnel, and eLearning
can reduce an entrepreneurs cost of providing this capability,"
said Constance Hall Barnaba, Administaffs vice president of
human resource services. "eUniversity is always accessible
to worksite employees, providing flexibilty that can alleviate the
productivity losses or additional travel expenses normally associated
with training."
